Privacy, it’s not that simple
Jantien Borsboom, director of PublicSpaces, gave a presentation on our Meetup on privacy. Specifically the challenges with privacy in the era of the internet. When platforms like Facebook lack a clear revenue model, they often rely on advertisements. And that means they’re using your personal information.
But when that personal data is misused, things can go wrong very quickly. For example, did Twitter and Facebook play a role in the political shift to the right and Trump’s election victory? How much fake news is actually being spread?
'Our mission? To create an alternative software ecosystem that represents the public interest.'
Time for a change
At PublicSpaces, they decided things had to change. They established a network of public organizations dedicated to making the internet a safer place. They aim to achieve this through awareness campaigns, research and development, and by facilitating the transition to privacy-friendly alternatives for digital tools.
